I love myself a banana smoothie. Bananas make the ultimate smoothies. They are hands down the best type of blender drink- in my mind. I have found them to be a healthy way to make thick, rich milkshake smoothies.
Using bananas in your smoothies: You can use fresh or frozen bananas for your smoothies.
Fresh bananas make creamy, milk like textures for your smoothies recipes.
When you use frozen bananas (my personal favorite) it makes smoothies cool, creamy and malt like. Adding some vanilla makes it really taste milky and is so heavenly.
I have a large collection of banana smoothies recipes because I make them almost every day. Night time snacks for me and my husband are often times the banana-coconut recipe below. Even if you don’t like bananas, give a few of these a try, and freeze them as it makes them less banana tasting.
Tips for freezing bananas: Years ago I realized that one long frozen banana doesn’t work well in the blender. When the fresh bananas get ripe, peel them and cut or break them into 3 large chunks. Loosely roll them into wax paper and place in the freezer. Always keep these on hand for a quick smoothie anytime.
The Vitamix can handle frozen bananas (and any frozen fruit) very well. Banana smoothies don’t keep very well in the fridge. Try to make only what you’ll drink immediately.
When we first got our Vitamix my husband and I made this. I think because it was all we had in the house. Thank goodness we did! It’s sort of become a staple as the snack smoothie. Malt-like and delicious, I find the bananas fade to the background and I feel like I’m eating something sinful…but I’m not.
This recipe should be enough for two people.
2 frozen bananas
½ cup of almond milk
1 tablespoon of honey or 1 date, pitted
1 tablespoon of vanilla
Place all the ingredients in your blender and process on high until smooth. If using a Vitamix, start off low, and then use the high speed, variable 10.
2 frozen bananas
1 cup of blueberries
A little coconut or almond milk to help blend
