Q: I have a 6 year old that has had constipation issues since she was a baby. I recently purchased a juicer to try to help get more fruits and veggies in her diet. Any specific kid friendly juice recipes you would recommend or stay away from for kids with constipation issues?
A: Hi Deb. I'm happy to say that fruit and vegetable juices generally promote healthy bowel movements in kids and adults. Most people who have never juiced before make comments that they can't believe how it's made them "regular" once they start making juicing a part of their daily diet.
That being said, juicing is a good idea for constipation in kids. Apple juice is a good option as it has pectin to help carry out waste and is usually a favorite amount kids. Also try plums, carrot juice and smoothies that include a bit of aloe vera juice.
Fruit smoothies are great options to maintain variety. The aloe vera is known for soothing the intestines and do keep it all moving inside.
Citrus juices tend to have the least amount of fiber, so try to stick to fruit and vegetable combinations.
Try smoothies and juices first thing in the morning, for breakfast, to encourage flow within the intestine.
